Summertime Review

The really unusual thing about Microgaming's Summertime slot game is it seems to be a fruit machine caught inside a video slot game's body. In fact, a majority of the symbols are symbols one would typically find on a 3-reel classic slot as opposed to a 5-reel video slot. It's hard to understand why Microgaming's game developers made that decision, which resulted in what could be termed a rather simplistic video slot.

While a couple of the special symbols try to catch the essence of summertime, the game's general motif fails to create anything approaching a summer feeling. The background is nothing more than a basic blue screen with a hint of sunshine. Other than that, summer is the one thing that seems to be missing from this particular game.

Summertime is played with a standard slot matrix of 5 reels and 9 pay lines. The game's minimum wagering requirement is a modest $.01 per pay line with a maximum possible bet of $1.00 per pay line. The player can choose to play up to 5 coins per spin, which would make the game's wagering range $.01 to $45 per spin.

As indicated earlier, the low-paying standard symbols are all represented by typical fruit machine symbols such as watermelons, oranges, lemons, plums, cherries, strawberries, a diamond, a bell, a seven, a bar and a logo "S." The wild symbol is represented by the "Summertime" game logo. It substitutes for all other symbols with the exception of the game's scatter symbol, which is represented by a sunset symbol with the word scatter inscribed on it.

The game's highest payout is awarded when the player lands a wild symbol on all five reels, which results in a 10,000X jackpot. If the player lands three or more scatter symbols, they earn 15 free spins with a 3X multiplier applicable to all free spin winnings. During the free spins round, free spins can be re-triggers by landing 3 or more scatters, just like in the base game.

Verdict: It doesn't take an experienced slot player to figure out that Summertime is one of Microgaming's earlier efforts. Aside from a decent payout structure, there isn't much to recommend with this game. Even the lack of meaningful audio and video features contribute to making this game feel and play like a standard fruit machine. Not all video slots can be great, but this one misses the mark by a wide margin.
